Roots

I want to be lost

To cut away the cords that hold me here

Encased in this form, like glass

To melt the tears of forgotten winters

Laid down in the high country

By ancestors who’s names

We did not think it important to remember

I want to also become nameless

Letting my body be a channel

Hewn in the living stone

My spine is a riverbed

A conduit of the great thawing

When I could not hold back the flood

I opened the gates and let

The uncontainable move through me

You saw us there

Planted on the borders

Of waters fed by many tributaries

You saw how our roots probe the dark earth

Roots wordlessly interwoven

Without end or beginning

Saw how cradled by the broken stone

We knew ourselves
