Innocence

Not all hearts are still capable of breaking

Over a lover

Over a friend

Over loss, inevitable as change itself

Through the wintering of the soul

Over that harsh imperative to put of the self into the world

With fumbled brush or hackneyed phrase

To say what otherwise we could not be willing to know

Heartbreak is a birthright

A vestigial link

A silver thread worked hand over hand, through the shadows

Guide to an age of innocence
